Roopkund Trek

Roopkund is the big one: a high, demanding trek to a glacial lake at 15,750 ft that, every few years when the snow recedes, reveals hundreds of ancient human skeletons at its edge. The mystery of who they were has never been fully solved, and the walk to find out is among the most spectacular in the Indian Himalaya.

The route crosses Ali and Bedni Bugyal, two of the largest high-altitude meadows in Asia, under the constant gaze of Trishul and Nanda Ghunti. It is graded difficult and demands real fitness and acclimatisation. We run it out of Lohajung over eight days.

May to June before the monsoon, and September to October after it. These windows give the safest snow conditions and the clearest meadows.

It is graded difficult. You reach 15,750 ft with long summit-day hours, so you need solid cardiovascular fitness and proper acclimatisation. It is not a first trek; do a moderate trek or two first.

Reach Dehradun and we handle the drive to Lohajung and back as part of the trek.
