The trek

Chandrashila, the 'moon rock', is the weekend summit that punches far above its effort. From the meadows of Chopta you climb past Tungnath, the highest Shiva temple in the world, to a 12,083 ft top that opens onto Nanda Devi, Trishul, Chaukhamba and Kedar dome in a single sweep.

Short, scenic and doable all year, it pairs beautifully with the emerald Deoria Tal lake. We run it as a tight three-day weekend out of Chopta, with the summit timed for sunrise.

A long, beautiful drive from Dehradun through Devprayag and Ukhimath to the meadows of Chopta. Camp for the night.

Trek 9 km · 6–7 hrsSummit 12,083 ft

A dawn climb past the Tungnath temple to the Chandrashila summit for the full Garhwal panorama, then back down to camp.

Short walk + drive

An optional morning visit to the reflective Deoria Tal lake, then the drive back to Dehradun.

It works all year. Spring and autumn give the clearest views, while December to March turns the summit climb into a snow trek. Monsoon is greenest but can be misty.

It is one of the best. The summit is graded easy to moderate and the whole trip fits into three days, making it ideal for a quick escape from the city.
